Forklift Components in More Detail
There are many components that make up a lift truck. The forklifts key components include the truck frame, the engine components, the tilt cylinders, the overhead guard and the wheels. What's more, a forklift consists of different types of attachments. All the parts making up a lift truck are all important because they work together to make the machine's operation possible. The next paragraphs describe in detail some of the forklift parts.
The Overhead Guard - The overhead guard is really the lift truck's metal roof, which sits atop the operator cab. It's job is to protect the operator while they are utilizing the machinery. The overhead guard makes sure that nothing falling from above onto the truck would hurt the operator or damage the controls inside the cab. The overhead guard is essential to the frame assembly on several models.
The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical forklift component made of interlocking rails. The mast enables the forks to move up and down whilst providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails can either have rollers or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast could be operated: chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor or hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders.
Lift Truck Carriage - The carriage is the component which the forks and other attachments are mounted to. The carriage is in fact directly connected to the hydraulic cylinder and is attached by chains. To be able to allow the forks to be raised and lowered, the carriage may have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - a back rest is a metal rack which prevents a load from falling backwards while the carriage is lifted to its full height. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.
Forklift Attachments - a variety of attachments can be fixed to the front of the lift truck. The most common attachment is forks. Also, there are L-shaped members, rotators, rollers, roll clamps, pole handlers and and all that. These different attachments are very handy for transporting various types of loads.
